Alcohol affects teenager’s lives every single day. Both genders, male and female, are influenced by this drug. Each gender may react differently or similarly depending upon the individual themself. It is said that 82% of men consume more alcohol than 72.5% of women do. Men are also more likely to be the heavier drinkers. (Lauer, Lauer, Abramson, Auger, 2006, p.63). It appears that alcohol abuse and alcoholism is dominant among the male gender.
Another topic that also relates to gender is role confusion. Many of those who experience role problems turn to alcohol as a coping mechanism. Role changes within their life as well may also tempt them to participate in drinking. For example, if a spouse has passed away, one may have to take on both roles as the dominant male or female within the family or household.
After consuming equal amounts of alcohol and even after the doses are adjusted according to body weight, women tend to reach higher BAC’s (blood alcohol concentration) than men do. Alcohol may have a greater affect on women in regard to cognitive functions such as memory, recollection etc. Women also eliminate about the equivalent amount of alcohol per unit body weight per hour as men do. However, women have a higher alcohol disappearance rate compared to men.
